Three grants stacked into one, taken straight off your bill — you never wait on a refund. Apartments qualify for up to €9,500. As of 2026-09-05.
Needs a home built and occupied before 2021, replacing a fossil-fuel or electric system, that passes a heat-loss assessment.
It heats your home with air.
Even a cold January day holds heat energy. The unit outside pulls it from the air the way a fridge pulls it from your milk — just in reverse — and moves it into your radiators and hot-water cylinder. Moving heat is far cheaper than making it, which is why one unit of electricity becomes three or four of warmth.
It runs gentler and longer than a boiler — a steady, even warmth rather than a blast — and it's standard kit in Norway and Sweden, where winters make Kildare look tropical.
Is it right for my house?
Honest answer: not for everyone. Here's the truth of it.
A good fit if…
- Built and occupied before 2021 — that's what unlocks the grant
- On oil, gas, solid fuel or electric heating (the €4,000 bonus is for replacing these)
- Reasonably insulated, or willing to sort insulation first
- Room outside for the unit — about a washing machine's worth — and space for a hot-water cylinder
Probably not, if…
- Built after 2020 — no grant, and your home likely doesn't need it
- Very poorly insulated with no plans to fix that — you'd be heating the street
- Expecting a boiler-style blast of heat — heat pumps run gentler, for longer
- If your budget is under ~€2,500 after the grant, a boiler swap may be the honest short-term call

The questions everyone actually asks
Does a heat pump work in an Irish winter?
Yes — they're standard kit in Norway and Sweden, which get far colder than Kildare. Modern units heat comfortably at -15°C and below.
What will it cost to run?
For most homes switching from oil, heating bills drop meaningfully — a heat pump turns one unit of electricity into three to four units of heat. Exact numbers depend on your insulation and tariff, and we'll talk you through them at the survey rather than promise a magic figure.
Do I need to replace my radiators?
Sometimes some of them. Heat pumps run at lower temperatures, so a few radiators may need upsizing. The survey checks every one before you commit.
How loud is the outdoor unit?
About as loud as a modern fridge — 40-50dB a metre away. You'll hear it if you stand beside it; your neighbours won't.
Why does my home need to pass a heat-loss assessment?
The grant requires it, and it protects you: a heat pump in a leaky home costs a fortune to run. If your home doesn't pass, we'll tell you what insulation would fix it — that has its own grants.
How long does the grant take?
SEAI approval typically takes a few weeks, and work can't start before it's in place. We file everything for you the day you give the go-ahead.
What about my hot water?
The heat pump heats your cylinder — most homes find they have more reliable hot water than before, and you can boost it any time.
